5 Journaling Prompts for When You Feel Completely Overwhelmed

June 20, 2026

When everything feels like too much, the page is one place that will always listen. These five prompts help you find your footing again.

Overwhelm has a way of making every option feel equally impossible. You know you should do something — but writing the first word feels like climbing a wall.

These prompts are not about solving your problems. They are about giving yourself space to breathe, see more clearly, and remember who you are underneath the noise.

1. What is one thing I know for certain right now?

Not hope for. Not wish. Know. Anchor yourself in something solid before you try to sort everything else.

2. What does rest look like for me today?

Not what you think it should look like. Not what the internet says. What does your specific body and mind actually need right now?

3. If I were giving advice to a close friend in my situation, what would I say?

We are almost always kinder to the people we love than we are to ourselves. Use that.

4. What is one thing I can let go of today?

Not forever. Just today. One expectation, one obligation, one worry — set it down and see how that feels.

5. What is something I did well this week, even if it felt small?

Overwhelm shrinks your view of yourself. This prompt pushes back.

Journaling will not fix the hard things. But it gives you a place to process them — and that is never nothing.
